|Description||The Rijeka Airport Ltd. started functioning in 1970 and was registered for domestic and international air traffic from the very start. It was built in the vicinity of the municipality of Omišalj, on the north-western edge of the Krk Island. The Island of Krk is 30 km from Rijeka, 530km far from Vienna, 590 km from Bratislava, 580 km from Budapest, 160 km from Ljubljana, 590 km from Munich, 850 km from Prague and 130 km from Trieste.
The Rijeka airport is located in a touristic area with more than 100 hotels within a range of 50 km. It is far enough from the urban and tourist settlements to avoid any problems with noise pollution. In the neighbourhood of the Rijeka Airport is the Adriatic Oil Pipeline - JANAF, the Rijeka – Zagreb motorway, a container terminal, a sea port and a railway station. There is a bridge connecting the Island of Krk with the land and the adjacent City of Rijeka, which is the administrative,
economical and cultural centre of the Primorje–Gorski Kotar County.
After a thorough analysis of the existing Airport condition and the space around it, and changes that occurred in the past period, and after having considered the changes that are expected to occur after Croatia joins the EU, it has been asserted that it is necessary to enlarge the building intended for international and domestic arrivals, and provide it with new supporting facilities. The construction of an annex building for airport passenger traffi c also involves the extension of the existing apron for air craft parking which will provide space for simultaneous acceptance of a greater number of air-crafts. The construction of facilities for warehousing and manipulation of goods transported by air will include the Rijeka Airport in the chain of intermodal transportation. The expansion and reconstruction works will be executed in accordance with the new safety and traffic regulations for air traffic. The project will reduce the actual seasonal character of Rijeka Airport, enlarge the cargo traffic, attract a larger number of passengers, tourists and business partners, and increase employment
thus improving the image of the City of Rijeka and the Primorje–Gorski Kotar County.
